What was your childhood racing game? Mine was Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. It still stands up well today, except the cop AI is pretty terrible.

NFS Underground was my first racing game with licenced cars so I’ll say that.

Also a good one. I was always mad that you didn't get the Audi R8 at the end though.

Gotta be Gran Turismo 1. I probably wouldnt be the car nut I am without that game. Also The Sims :D

Gran Turismo 4 was the game that I played the most, also NFS Underground 2 but I played that a little less.

Same game as me. along with star wars podracer

I played NFS:HP2 back in the real early days when it came out (I was probably 4 or 5). I don’t remember much except the song The People That We Love which is still my favorite song today.

Never played that one, I played a bit of UG2 though. I mean I was like 5/6 at the time so I was really bad at it. I would mainly just take the Escalade and crash into everything and everyone in the freeroam.

Oh yeah, same. My dad needed to navigate the menus for me and I got arrested constantly but that game was so many fun hours. And thanks for getting the people that we love stuck in my head.

All the Need For Speeds, but while I cut my teeth on II, I spent a massive amount of time on III Hot Pursuit (the original), and downloaded cars, mods, graphic enhancements, and tracks to further my enjoyment. It was also among the last to have built-in cheat codes that were findable only after scouring the internet on dial-up, or finding the guidebook or a strategy guide at a store.

Physics are a bit “eh”, but it has over 160 licensed trucks (Gran Turismo style with tons of slightly different duplicates), pretty impressive customization even by todays standards, about 40 varied free-roamable environments each with hidden easter eggs and treasure chests that give you some more money for career mode, one can go racing or do driving missions that involve exploring or rescuing stuff. Kept me busy for four years.

This looks like one of those sketchy $5 Walmart PC games. I had my fair share of those.

Oh yeah. I played this more when I was older and my uncle gave me his old Ps2 complete with like every NASCAR game available for it and burnout and a bunch of NFS games and some FPS games that I wasn't allowed to play.
![]() 06/26/2016 at 12:44 |

It was actually an online flash game. You can still play it, but it hasn’t aged well.

On consoles, specifically Sega Genesis, it’d be Road Rash 3,
Micro Machines, and Lotus Racing III.
On PC it’d be Viper Racing and Sports Car GT.

I had those (and still do) but never played them. I got the box set for the PC of 2- hot pursuit 2 for Christmas when I was like 4 or 5. I mainly played hp2 and a bit of Porsche unleashed

Best racing game of all time. The Hupmobile of racing games, if you would. Combined violent murder and awkward racial stereotypes, not to mention carcrobatics, the greatest cheat code in the world when combined with unlimited nitro and the glass pyramid in Paris.

I was afforded the luxury of riding in a new (at the time) Benz, but not that of a $300 game console. Priorities.

I used to play the hell out of these games, NFS 2, NFS 3 Hot Pursuit, and 4x4 Evo (1 and 2, so fun.) Ever play Monster Truck Madness? 4x4 Evo stole some tracks from there.
Anyone play NFS Porsche Unleashed?
![]() 06/26/2016 at 13:02 |

Hot Pursuit 2 was great, but by the time I was old enough to really get into cars and really enjoy games, Test Drive Unlimited was the shit.
I remember hitting over 250 in a Saleen S7 while weaving in and out of traffic and for a 13 year old, it doesn't get much better than that.

What about Midtown Madness?

Smashing through a road block at 330kph in a McLaren F1 LM, the going to my 5th house garage then swapping it for a Koenigsegg CCR to rear end fire truck, hit police cars, and smash more road blocks. Loved it 10 years ago, still love playing it now. I have like 6 houses, and 55 cars in right now.

Hot Pursuit 2 on the GameCube. I even had a cheap racing wheel and pedals to go with it. I played the crud out of that game. I remember one afternoon I spent over an hour just going back and forth through a tunnel in the F50.

NFS HP2 for me too, I have fond memories of the occasional glitches. A cop chasing me rammed a parked car and it went flying one time at a friends. Cops don’t care if you do donuts around them unless you hit, which was hilarious.

Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64.

You could very easily run over pedestrians in this game. I beat it using the low difficulty cheat code i should go back and play honestly.
![]() 06/26/2016 at 13:30 |

Midtown Madness 3 and NFSU2.
Though I started out with excitebike then Cruisin’ USA, to date myself a bit. I do remember another game similar to Cruisin’ USA but I can’t remember the name right now...you could drive a golf cart and one of the courses put you on a wooden roller coaster
EDIT: MIDNIGHT CLUB. I played the ever living FUCK out of MC1 and 2

I played all the usual games, need for speed, cruisin USA, gran turismo.
I thought I’d share something a bit more unusual. I present...
Beetle Adventure Racing! Such a rediculous game with goofy cars. But a fun multi-player and amusing racing made it a good time!

Daytona USA in the arcades—I remember when I first played in like ‘94, and now at an age of 32, I still do a couple of sessions to stay sharp. If NASCAR looked anything like that game with its drifting hairpins and corners, I would be glued to my fucking seat watching it.

3 was great, 4 was even better from a mod based community standpoint. By the time I was done, every track and car was replaced with a high poly count version or with textures replaced from Porsche Unleashed.

I wasted hours of my childhood playing: Need for speed 3 hot pursuit, need for speed high stakes, need for speed porsche unleashed, NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND, NFSU 2, need for speed most wanted, mario kart 64, & Gran turismo 4
![]() 06/26/2016 at 21:25 |

4 was good, but I didn't like the cops, and it acted more buggy on me. Playing career mode starting with the Z3 and SLK230 caused a bug on my machine if I got 1st in the first few races and upgraded too quickly, as far as I remember
![]() 06/26/2016 at 23:36 |

I never played the career mode. I just downloaded new cars and tracks and drove around
